Self-Care Sunday Devotionals: Stepping Out in Faith

The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.

PSalm 73:23-24 NLT

When Kelly was in college, she sensed that God was asking her to go to China and teach English for a couple of months. He seemed to be opening the door, but she wanted to be sure she was hearing his voice correctly.

She prayed. She fasted. She sought counsel. She pleaded for God to give her a sign so she would KNOW she was supposed to go. Then one day, while at laundromat, she noticed a small booklet on one of the tables. It was all about the need for the gospel to be preached in China. What clearer sign did she need?

Yet still, she hesitated. Kelly was an over-thinker by nature and kept asking herself, “but how can one really know that they are in the will of God? What if I go to China and then find out later that it wasn’t really what God wanted?

Ultimately it was a phone conversation with her dad that not only made her decide to go to China, but also freed her from years of hesitating to act because of FEAR.

He said, “Kelly, you truly want God’s will and He knows that. Even if you find out later that going to China wasn’t His perfect will for you, don’t you trust that He’s big enough to handle it?”

She was dumbstruck. God wasn’t asking her to make perfect decisions. He was asking her to trust her imperfect decisions with a perfect God.

As you enter the unknown of 2021, don’t let fear hold you back from what you are sensing God is asking you to do. If you have prayed diligently and your motivation is pure, step out fearlessly into all that God has for you.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, strengthen our faith that we may step out today in bold obedience. Amen.
