What causes doubt?

There are many reasons why we may find our faith faltering and our doubts mounting. Be it past experiences or mistakes, comparison, or doubt based in fear, dealing with doubt is something each of us will face.

Focusing on the doubts lead us into a cycle where our eyes are distracted away from looking towards God and become focused on the mountain we see before us. We begin to magnify the strength of the doubts which keeps our minds off the fact that we serve an all powerful God!

This magnification of the doubt can lead us to feel like God is failing us. This IS NOT TRUE! God’s sovereignty is perfect, his knowledge is complete. He knows what he is doing and and belief in Him is our hope!

We can believe in a God who lives beyond our comprehension and always has a plan will continue to use all things for good. He is faithful and perfect even when we don’t understand what is going on.

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” John 20:27

This scripture on doubt reminds us that in the moments when doubt is present we do not have to hide from the Lord. He will give us reassurance and show his hand in our lives. We can trust that he will not be angry with our doubt and will pull us near him and reveal himself to us, if we ask.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13

So often our doubts are wrapped up in unrealized expectations and unknown situations. When the world is uncertain we can begin to forget that God is sovereign and he is all-knowing. He has a plan for our lives. He has seen every step we have taken and the steps that he plans for us to take. We can trust him with our lives because he is present in our right now and our future.

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6

While it is okay to have moments where we question things, we can not rest in a place of unbelief. We should bring our doubts and fears to the Lord and ask him to help us in these places of unbelief. Then we should trust that he is faithful to give us that which we ask! We can be especially sure that we will receive our requests especially when we are asking for more of God.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. Hebrews 11:1-2

Bible verses about doubt and fear

Many times doubt is also wrapped up in fear. When we doubt there is normally something that we are afraid will come to pass. These bible verses about doubt and fear can encourage you when you are dealing with fear.

And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. Matthew 21:21

Faith is the opposite of doubt and fear, and this powerful verse on doubt is an inspiration to walk in the power that the Lord gives us through our faith. When we activate our faith we can overcome the doubt and fears that keep us small and overcome our fears!

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7

This bible verse on doubt and fear reminds us what God has put in us. We were not created to walk in fear and doubt. We were not created to cower when things get uncertain. Instead God gave us the Holy spirit which fills us with a faith to speak love which overcomes all and power to speak the truth of God’s word against our situations.

And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 2 Peter 1:19

When the world seems dark and uncertain and you begin to doubt God’s sovereignty, this scripture can be an encouragement to look to the truth in the word of God. His word gives us insight into what is to come and allows us to not be surprised when the world is filled with hate, death, and destruction. You can put your faith and hope in the word of the Lord.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10

When you are dealing with doubt, understanding where the doubt comes from can help you to combat the doubt and speak truth in faith. Knowing that doubt is a door to push us towards walking outside of the will of God, can encourage us to be diligent about building up our faith.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

It is easy to feel afraid when you believe yourself to be alone, however, this scripture on doubt reminds us that the Lord is with us in every situation we are in.

And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. Matthew 8:26

Even in our fears and doubts, the Lord helps us. Fear is an absence of faith in the truth of the Lord. Perhaps your faith is in things of the world. Maybe its in your status, or your finances, or your government, but the only true antidote for fear is to rest your faith squarely in the Lord.

Bible verses on doubt and worry

Daily there are new things to be worried about, from government strife, racial tension, raising children in an increasingly evil world, to global health crises, there is no lake of worry. But God says that he wants to take on your worries and offer you comfort and peace. These bible verses about doubt and worry can encourage the restless heart.

Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Mark 11:23

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. Proverbs 3:5-8

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. James 1:6-8

God did not set his heart and intentions on us because we would always feel the right things. He loves us despite the fact that we may have doubts and those doubts may be towards us. Admitting it, just opens the doorway of our hearts and softens them to reveal his truths and restoration in those places of doubt.

God created us for community. The popularity of social media is testament to that. However, community is more than just likes and followers. It’s meant to be about connection and growth. Pray this prayer for doubt

Prayer is one of the most powerful weapons we have against the tactics of the enemy, additionally, it is one of the best ways to be still before the Lord and hear his heart. In prayer we can offer our struggles and then through prayer journaling and intentional listening to the voice of the Lord, hear his heart for us.

The following prayer for doubt can encourage you when you feel lost, doubtful, fearful, or worried.

Be still my restless soul. Lord who am I? I have been questioning who I am, and how I am. I have been questioning you and your plan for me. I have turned away from you. I have filled the emptiness in my heart with everything but you. I have been searching for peace that you alone have the ability to give me. I have looked for strength and hope in others and have placed my worth in the opinions of others. My eyes have not been on you.

I ask for your forgiveness, for trying to do your job, for not believing your plan, for not trusting you, for constantly putting idols in your place. I have been far from you. I have denied myself your peace and comfort. I have denied myself the security of your salvation. I have continually walked in bondage although you have spoken words of freedom over me. I constantly chose bondage over your goodness.

Lord, it is my heart that needs healing, forgiveness, and salvation. I cannot help others if I am not strong. I thank you for your grace and unfailing love. I know what you have for me is for me, and there is nothing I can do that will change your mind. I am clinging to you father.

You are the anchor for my soul. You are my strength, in you is my only hope. I know I can count on you. I need to know more about your love before I know how to show love to others. I need to accept your love and believe that you  accept me as I am, and perfect me because you love me. Thank you for your faithfulness.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen
