Bible Verses on Thanksgiving

What is a good bible verse for thanksgiving? The bible is full of verses that encourage us and remind us to give thanks to the Lord. From prayers of thanksgiving to the words of thanks in the Psalms, there are several guiding verses we can use on thanksgiving.

When seeking inspiration for thanksgiving prayers, praying the scriptures is one of my favorite ways of learning what to pray to the Lord. Here are a few bible verses about thanksgiving to help inspire your heart to give thanks to the Lord.

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. Psalm 107:1-3 ESV

In this verse we are encouraged to give thanks to the Lord for his steadfast love. In his Love we were redeemed from the trouble of the world and is worthy of our praises.

… but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your hearts to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to our God and Father. Ephesians 5:18-20

The day of thanksgiving is about joining one with another and speaking words of praise and thanksgiving. That is exactly what this bible verses alludes to: having an attitude of gratitude and thanking god for his many blessings.

This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

This bible verse on thanksgiving is a perfect beginning to your prayer for thanksgiving as it sets the tone and places reverence where reverence is due. Solely in the lap of our God almighty.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:28

This verse about thanksgiving reminds us that we serve a mighty and powerful God. It reminds us that we are not simply blessed because, but we are blessed by an awesome and powerful living God. Praise should be not just something we do but who we are.

And on that day you will say, “Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name. Make known His deeds among the peoples; make them remember that His name is exalted.” Praise the LORD in song, for He has done glorious things; let this be known throughout the earth. Isaiah 12:4-5

Again this thanksgiving scripture encourages us to praise the Lord on High and to sing his praises and tell the world of the many wonderful things he has done!

Thanksgiving prayer points

What should you pray for? Thanksgiving prayer points help to remind you of the many ways that you can give thanks to the Lord! Of course, this list is not exhaustive, but it is a great place to start! Additionally, you can simply start a gratitude list, and everyday list down 3-5 things you thank the Lord for. Then you can use your own thanksgiving prayer points list in your thanksgiving prayer.

  • His Provision
  • His power
  • His word
  • His salvation

Thanksgiving Prayers in the bible

Another place to get inspiration for prayers for thanksgiving is to seek out the thanksgiving prayers that are in the bible. Similar to praying the scriptures, praying prayers from the bible can be a great way to start off your thanksgiving meal prayers. Here are just a few of the prayers of thanks in the bible.

“Praise be to you, LORD, the God . . . from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.” 1 Chronicles 29:10-13

“Stand up and praise the LORD your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting. Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.” Nehemiah 9:5-6

I love you, LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies. Psalm 18:1-3

I will exalt you, LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me. LORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. You, LORD, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit. Sing the praises of the LORD, you his faithful people; praise his holy name. For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning…. You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. LORD my God, I will praise you forever. Psalm 30:1-5, 11-12

“The LORD is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him… Who among the gods is like you, LORD? Who is like you—majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?… The LORD reigns for ever and ever.” Exodus 15:2, 11, 18

I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. Deuteronomy 32:3-4

“My heart rejoices in the LORD; in the LORD my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” 1 Samuel 2:1-2

And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.” Luke 1:46-55

“Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted.” Isaiah 12:4

“Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps of their children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the LORD Almighty, great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.” Jeremiah 32:17-19

Father God, We are grateful that You are all knowing. Grateful that You see beyond our limited vision, and You provide based on that vision. Lord we ask that Your Holy Spirit reveal any divided devotion in us. If there is anything which we have placed in high regard and therefore have minimized our understanding of our need of You. We know that all we have is Yours, the whole world is Yours and its fullness is Yours! You are God above all, and we praise You for Your righteousness. In Jesus’ name, Amen

A praise for God’s peace in our lives

Lord, we thank You for the peace which You provide through our faith. You sent Your son to die on the cross for us, You made him like us, to experience humanity, to suffer, and die for our sins, so that we might be able to enjoy abundance with You in Heaven. You desired us so much that You gave it all for us. This is a gift that can not be taken away, our place in Your Kingdom can not be shaken, for this we are in awe of You. Our treasure therefore is in heaven with You! Through grace, we are who we are, by faith in Jesus! We praise You and love You Father! In Jesus’ name, Amen
