Identity in Christ Devotional: 20 Powerful I AM Affirmations from the Bible

I haven’t always accepted my identity in Christ. In fact, it has taken me a LONG time to truly learn to be the authentic me and accept the way God made me. In fact, if I am honest, who I am and who I believe myself to be is a daily struggle. As a single woman I struggled to believe that I was worthy enough to be chosen for marriage.

As a dentist, I struggle to believe that I should be consulted on treatment that I know like the back of my hand. In blogging I struggle with impostor syndrome as well, often believing the lie that God made a mistake when he chose me to encourage you.

It has taken a LOT of soul searching, prayer, and developing a habit of speaking I AM affirmations from the bible over my heart and broken places to really get to a place where I am okay with accepting the beauty of everything God created me to be!

In this post I will share a little bit about my struggle with mistaken identity and give you some tips on how you can avoid those struggles and instead embrace your identity in Christ through the power of biblical I AM affirmations.

Why is it important to know your identity in Christ?

When you don’t know who you are, you will accept the identity that others claim you to be.

This world gives us so many labels. It tries to attach these labels to us, and in many ways, we accept them. These labels are tied to our sin, or economic status, our upbringing. On the other hand, God’s word gives us a new identity. Our true identity in Christ.

It is so important to meditate on the Word of God and really embrace who he says you are! When we embrace the truth of our identity in Christ we can walk confidently in the purpose and plans that God has for us. Because we accept who he says we are, we can accept what he says we can do.

Knowing your identity in Christ also allows you to tap into the power of the Holy spirit because you believe it is within your grasp.

When you falsely believe the lies that society tells you about yourself, lies about your worth, your ability, and your freedom in Christ; the guilt of shame can be stifling and can keep you in sin. When instead you believe with your whole heart the identity that God says we have because of Christ, then you can walk in freedom from the things that hold you back.

You can break curses and walk in the power of the word of God. All this from embracing your identity in Christ!

My Struggles with Identity

I have a healthy aversion to people. Many who know me may not believe me when I say this. I know, when you see me, I’m smiling and laughing and I’m very friendly, right? That is how I have learned to be. I have practiced my people skills. In most cases I already know you very well. We’re likely friends, best friends even.

For those of you who do not know me, well perhaps you have made some of the same observations, You see the me that is being perfected.  You see me as the me I have become as I understand my identity in Christ. I’m very glad for this and feel blessed that this is who God sees me to be.

But just for a moment, think back to the first few conversations you had with me, they were likely very kind, but if you think hard, you may realize that I didn’t speak very much. Its coming back now right? I was friendly, it was a great conversation, but I laughed a lot. Almost a questionable amount of laughter right? You didn’t think much of it at the time, but if I’m being honest, laughter is my ultimate defense mechanism.

As a general rule, social interactions are at best tolerable, at worst, one of the toughest necessary things I have to do. Why? Well I have a history of anxiety, I worry about what I am going to say, and if its going to come out right. I worry whether or not my words will be important. My brain shuts down when I get around too many people who I don’t know, and I don’t believe they will actually like me. So I stay quiet and agreeable and small and I laugh, because people like laughter. It makes others comfortable and it allows me to navigate a world where I can’t be a recluse.

Identity is funny like that. We can transform ourselves into a person who we think is tolerable all the while hiding the beautiful truth of our authentic self. The self that God created.

What does the bible say about identity in Christ?

Much of the bible is a love story to us from God. It is a story of redemption and reconciliation. It is full of verses about God’s plans and scriptures on identity in Christ. When I decided to follow the Lord and accept him as my savior, I had to do the hard work of breaking down the many negative thoughts of my identity.

We are children of God by Creation

Through creation, “God said, ’Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over…” all other creatures on earth. “And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it’” (Gen 1:26-28). Thus God endowed man with two qualities resembling His—to reproduce His likeness and to rule.

This simple truth is enough to remind me that I am God’s daughter by virtue of creation. When I study these scriptures on identity in Christ and truly write them on my heart, it becomes easier to stand firm on other truths. Just as natural children resemble their parents, men and women resemble God. He made us in His image after all.

We are God’s Chosen Children

In 1 Peter 2:9 we read, “But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”

These words are so life bringing! They are words of love. The bring light to the idea that God saw me, in all the mess that I was in, and chose me to be set apart to live in His light. For a girl who has spent much of life just wanting to be chosen, this scripture speaks to every broken place in my heart, and gives me courage to walk boldly towards the things God has planned for me.

We are God’s children by faith

The last thing that the bible tells me about my identity in Christ is this, I must remember that through Jesus Christ, all of the children of Adam are eligible to be eternal children of God. On the day that I decided that I wanted to follow Jesus, I accepted the promise of eternal inheritance over my life. “For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God….and if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise” (Gal 3:26, 29).

I became a spiritual child of God, reconciled to him by faith and not flesh. Because he created me, and he chose me, and I believed. “But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God” (John 1:12).

Studying these verses about our identity through Christ and speaking them over our lives can significantly impact your ability to walk in purpose and accept all that God has for your life. You will no longer be stalled by the struggles that mom guilt or the lure of perfection has over you.
