God is in Control! 30 Powerful Bible Verses About Overcoming Fear

We all have fears, but as Christians we have a powerful answer to overcome it! Fear does not get to control us. As heirs to the kingdom we can use the word of God to activate the same power that raised Jesus from the dead to overcome the fear in our lives. We can meditate on, pray, and memorize bible verses about overcoming fear to step into our faith and remember God is in Control!

My child does not like to be in a room alone. His busy imagination runs wild when walking around the house into dark rooms. Because of this, sitting in our dining room while I make breakfast is completely out of the question. He will come into the kitchen and stand right beside me while I am at the stove, or worse, plop down on the floor behind me to put on his shoes.

Every morning, I place him at the end of the counter, 3 feet away from the bubbling oil and high heat.

Every morning, over time he inches closer and closer to the hot stove and away from the darkened dining room, not realizing that his perceived danger and fear of the darkness pales in comparison to the real danger that lies by me and the hot stove.

I tell my child often he doesn’t need to be afraid because of my presence. As I think on that last sentence, I can’t help but think how often I am like my child. I find myself paralyzed with fear. Not wanting to face it and pleading with God, inching closer to the fire that he is protecting me from. Not remembering that he is with me. I forget that God did not give me a spirit of fear!

Definition of spirit of fear in the bible?

Worry, anxiety, fear. This is how we get from a place of faith to fear. Fear is the set of unpleasant emotions that are caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain or threat.

Worry is the first feeling we may sense. When we do not take captive every worrying thought immediately those thoughts take up root in our minds and heart.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

2 Corinthians 10:5

Rooted worries become anxieties.

Anxiety is a physiologic response to worries. It is your body’s natural response to stress, a feeling of apprehension that elicits a physical reaction. Beating heart, enlarged eyes, a rush of adrenaline. The bible tells us is Philippians 4:6-7 not to be anxious about anything, instead we are commanded to pray, and praise and God would give us peace. The Lord tells us “do not be afraid” because of his presence, but when we do not pray, we allow those anxieties to grow. We are not aware of his presence. As anxieties grow its hard not to be afraid. The spirit of fear is grown and taken root in our hearts!

Powerful Bible verses about overcoming fear

The bible gives hundreds of powerful bible verses encouraging us not to fear. It is often quoted that there are at least 365 bible verses on fear and overcoming it. The bible implores us to press into Jesus and allow His spirit to give us strength. In the moments when it seems our fears may overtake us, we need Rhema word to use.

This word that is impressed on our hearts becomes our weapon to use in times of spiritual battle. Use these scriptures on fear in your situation to overcome what the enemy wants to use for harm and walk into God’s victory! Here are a few powerful bible verses about overcoming fear to encourage you

1) Remember that God is in control

“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.  He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

Mark 4:39-40

This bible verse about overcoming fear speaks to the fact that one of the main reasons that we feel fear is that we feel that things are out of our control. Worry about this lack of control lead us to fear what may come. When we focus on the fact that God is in control and allow this to encourage us, fear no longer has the same sting in our lives.

The easiest way to do this is to live a life surrendered to God’s will and purpose for our lives. When we do this in all things, we are less likely to worry about being in control because we are living a surrendered life.

2) We were not given a spirit of fear

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

2 Timothy 1:7

When we feel overrun with fear, the next thing we can do is remember the gifts that we get freely from God. This scripture about overcoming fear reminds us that if we are walking in a spirit of fear or timidity, this was not given to us by our father. The spirit that is in us, the one that he gave us, is one of power, love, and a sound mind.

3) Scriptures on fear that remind us to Rest in the Lord

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”…He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.  You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.  A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you…For he will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways…“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.  He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him…” Psalm 91:1-16

This psalm is one of the most powerful bible verses about overcoming fear. It is a verse that is commonly prayed when someone is feeling fearful. It is a rallying cry for all of God’s children to know that no matter what situation you are in, there is rest from the emotions that come through this earthly experience.

It reminds us that when we find rest in the lord, there is no fear!

4) Trust God will save you

The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.

Zephaniah 3:17

When your worries and fears come in the form of physical harm, you must believe in the saving power of our Father in Heaven. He delights in you. Can you just imagine, the lord singing over you. We are loved so much by him. So much so that he gave his son for us. When we are reminded of this during times of fear, we can be assured that he will save us.

5) Know that God is with you

“Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Deuteronomy 31:6

Knowing without a doubt that God is with you in the midst of your trials and fears is a truth that we should cling to always, but especially when working to overcoming fears we have.

There is so much going on in the world today. Nations in turmoil, uncertainty, sickness, and war, it can be so easy to get shift our gaze to the things we can see. When you find yourself in this place, look up and remember that no matter where you are, if you seek God, he is right there!

6) Bring your worries to God

“Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time.  Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.”

Peter 5:6-7

One of the most powerful ways to overcome fear is to bring your worries and fears to God in prayer. Laying your concerns at the alter and leaving then there, then allowing God to pour his love, strength, and comfort over you can make the difference before being paralyzed and walking out purpose.

There are many ways you can bring your concerns to the Lord in your quiet time, whether that is through prayer journaling, breath prayers, or simply praying through scriptures.

7) Believe that God will give you peace

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7

This is one of my favorite bible verses about overcoming fear because it says essentially everything that I could ever need to know. It gives me an offer and alternative to fear and then goes on to give us a promise should we choose that alternative. We are told that we don’t have to fear but instead we can present our fear to God. In doing that, God exchanges those concerns with his peace.
